The Teal Pumpkin Project®: A great way to keep the fun in Halloween!

With food sensitivities on the rise, Halloween isn’t a delightful event for many of our little friends and neighbors.

Enter the Teal Pumpkin Project®.

It all started in 2012 with a Tennessee mom’s idea to offer non-food Halloween treats. She painted a pumpkin teal, the color of food allergy awareness, and placed it conspicuously for the trick or treaters to see. By 2014, FARE (Food Allergy Research and Education) took up the cause, promoting this idea nationwide.

Quoting from their website (, “Putting a teal pumpkin on your doorstep means you have non-food treats available, such as glow sticks or small toys. This simple act promotes inclusion for trick-or-treaters with food allergies or other conditions.”

To participate, simply lay in a supply of non-food treats when you shop for the traditional candy. Then, place a teal pumpkin on your porch or in your driveway, so families will know you have something for the kids who, due to allergies, cannot accept the usual fare. (Some stores are starting to carry plastic teal pumpkins – check your favorite store, and ask them to carry these if they don’t already.)

There are any number of inexpensive items you can find at party supply stores and online. Some ideas are bracelets or necklaces, pencil toppers and erasers, bubbles, noisemakers, spider rings, and other Halloween themed favors. Let your imagination be your guide! (Note: most moldable clay contains gluten, a common allergen, so you’ll want to leave that out of the mix.)

You may be surprised, when offering both food and non-food items, how many times the pirate or superhero will choose the non-food item.

You get to be the superhero this year!
